• Stone Town - Zanzibar

FULL DAY TOUR
Step back in time and uncover the harrowing yet powerful history of the Zanzibar slave trade. This full-day tour takes you through the most significant sites linked to the slave trade, weaving together stories of human suffering, resilience, and eventual freedom. It’s a moving experience that connects you directly to Zanzibar’s past and its role in the global slave trade.

What You’ll Experience
Slave Chambers & Underground Tunnel (Tumekuja)
Begin in Stone Town at Kizingo and visit the Tumekuja underground chambers, once used as the first detention point for enslaved people awaiting auction. Although the chambers are under renovation, your guide will show you the historic ground location and explain its significance.

First Slave Market Site (Shangani Street)
Discover the site of Zanzibar’s first slave market, originally located on Suicide Street (now Shangani Street). Learn how it later shifted to Mkunazini, the site of today’s Anglican Cathedral.

Anglican Cathedral & Last Slave Market (Mkunazini)
Step into the grounds of the Anglican Cathedral, built on the very site of the last slave market in Zanzibar. Here, you’ll see the haunting underground chambers and memorials that honor the victims of slavery.

Sailing Dhow Experience
From Forodhani Gardens (Makachu – Jumping Boys Centre), board a traditional dhow to experience how slaves were transported from the mainland. Sail towards the Mtoni Palace ruins, then disembark where your driver awaits. This powerful sailing trip allows you to feel history from the water’s perspective.

Mangapwani Slave Chambers
Continue by road (approx. 45 minutes from Stone Town) to the Mangapwani Slave Chambers, once used to hide slaves long after the official abolition of slavery in 1873. Learn how the trade continued secretly until it was fully banned in 1909.
