HALF-DAY TOUR (APPROX. 3 HOURS)
Just a short boat ride from Stone Town, Prison Island (also called Tortoise Island or Changuu Island) is one of Zanzibar’s most popular offshore excursions. The island is small - about 1 square kilometer - but rich with history, nature, and relaxation opportunities.
About the Island
Located only 20 minutes by speedboat (or 30 minutes by wooden dhow) from Stone Town. Entirely formed of coral limestone, surrounded by turquoise waters. Lush with tropical trees and a small white sandy beach ideal for swimming and relaxation.
The island’s name comes from the prison built in the late 19th century, originally intended to house slaves. However, it was never used for that purpose. Instead, it later served as a quarantine station during the colonial period. Today, the ruins of the prison remain and tell fascinating stories of the island’s past.
